Day of the Dead

Dia de los muertos

Lately, I seem to be emerging myself in this fascinating aspect of the Mexican culture. It is truly a beautiful event/holiday that can by traced back perhaps 3,000 years ago. The holiday is celebrate on November 1 and 2nd in honor of deceased loved ones. Family and friends will build alters, gather around loved ones grave sites and offer the deceased delicious foods and trinkets.

The most represented symbol, from what I gather ,is The Lady of the Dead/goddess or the modern Catrina. She is said to be keeper of the bones.

In honor of this holiday I have created mask and sugar skulls. Check them out.

Sketchbook Project 2012

So I did something stupid...I thought I could have a full time job, be a full time illustrator and a full time mom/wife all at the same time. "I must have hit my head hard."

Its hard enough to be a mom/wife but add a full time job to that and there is nothing left to accomplish your dreams. "I want to give props to all those who work full time jobs, you guys rock."

Although, I wish I could rock like you guys...I just cant. There is not enough time in the day. So I gave up that endless career and am now focusing on more important things...like The Sketchbook Project.

Broken Heart

So today, I decided to pass the time with another personal project. "Lets just say I'm dealing with some stuff."

Any who, here is how it went.

First I put gesso on my canvas, then I used stucco to create the broken heart. Next I painted the buildings using acrylics and my fingers to smear it all 'Yay'.

Then I got carried away and added glitter, not sure if that was the right thing...but I just love glitter.

Until next time.

Bio

Where do I start?

Well, I like to always say that "I have been drawing and writing since the day my fingers blossomed into pencils".  Coming from a socially and emotionally damaging childhood, I had to find a way to occupy my time. In others words I had to find a way to escape the crap. Somewhere along the way my love for the arts developed. I never really thought of myself as 'good' or even 'talented' but I knew that no matter what I just had to draw or write something. So here I am today still trying to deal and no matter what I just have to draw or write.

I don't have a BA in art or any kind of schooling what so ever but what I do have is shear love of putting something on paper. Sure I went to school for other things, like to have a real career in computers "Yea Right". No offense to anyone, it just wasn't for me. Art has always been there. So here I am exposing it, in all it's glory or mortification. You take it as you see it either way its there.

Inspiration

I grab inspiration from almost anything. I have a ton of notes where I have jotted down ideas. Thank God I have and iPhone or else I would be a tower of sticky notes.

My work tends to look more dream like but maybe that's because I spend too much time in my own head. I use a variety of medias, from...chalk to charcoal, acrylic and digital. Its so much fun to jot down a sketch then edit it in photo shop. The transition of lighting is amazing and really gives the art a pop.

I prefer to keep it childlike, cause somewhere along the way that was the one thing I lost.
